FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MAZDA MX-30

The Mazda MX-30 was introduced to California in 2021 as the first all-electric Mazda vehicle, prior to a larger U.S. rollout planned for 2022. Let's take a closer look at the Mazda MX-30 and answer some FAQs.

IS THE MX-30 100% ELECTRIC?

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is a fully electric vehicle featuring Mazda's e-SKYACTIV electric engine platform and lithium-ion battery with a 35.5 kWh output. The AC Synchronous e-SKYACTIV generates a maximum output of 143 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. This electric platform means an equivalent efficiency of 94 MPGe on the highway, 85 MPGe in the city, and a combined MPGe of 92.

WHAT IS THE RANGE OF THE MX-30?

The MX-30 has an EPA-estimated driving range of 100 miles with a full charge. This range can vary, though, depending on the battery condition, your driving habits, and even the temperature. To get the most out of your battery life, be sure to bring your vehicle in for regular maintenance so your technician can address any issues with battery charge and condition. At Capistrano Mazda, our team of certified technicians can ensure your battery is in top condition, so you get the maximum range for your vehicle.

HOW FAST WILL THE MX-30 CHARGE?

You have several options for vehicle charging, including public and home stations:

  • Level 1 (120-volt). A Level 1 charges the MX-30 from 20% to 80% in approximately 14 hours. Level 1 cable is included with the vehicle and can be plugged into a regular 120V GFI household outlet at home.
  • Level 2 (240-volt). Level 2 charger can range from 16 to 48 amps. 30 amps will charge your MX-30 from 20% to 80% in approximately 3 hours.
  • Level 3. This type of charging is also known as DC fast-charging and will bring the time it takes to charge your MX-30 from 20% to 80% down to 40 minutes.
  • HOW Do I Charge My MX-30?

We made a video walkthrough of exactly how to charge your Mazda MX-30. Check it out!

WHY ARE CHARGING FIGURES 20% TO 80% AND NOT 0% TO 100%?

Because electric vehicle owners rarely drive their vehicles close to empty, a quick charge from 20% to 80% is often all that is required. Additionally, the last 20% of charging (from 80-100%) is slowed for level 3 charging to protect the battery’s longevity.

How Much Does a Home Charging Station Cost?

The cost of installing a home charging station can differ between unit charge levels. Installation prices and cost of labor can also factor into the cost of a home charging station. A Level 2 charger can cost anywhere between $420 and $800 in labor and between $850 and $2,200 for purchase and materials. Level 2 chargers are the most common type of at-home station and can have your vehicle fully charged in a few hours with power in the 220-volt capacity.

When you shop with Capistrano Mazda, we'll help you price your residential EV charging station and get you qualified for the $500 credit toward the purchase of your ChargePoint Home Flex charger.

Can I Charge My Car at Any Charging Station?

You have several options when it comes to charging up your MX-30. A home charging station is one option, and you can find public charge stations as well as charging stations at various gas stations. The onboard charger can take up to 6.6 kW per charge, which means you can hook your MX-30 up to any Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 CCS rapid charger. The $500 ChargePoint credit also applies to public charging at any participating ChargePoint stations.

WHAT’S THE STARTING PRICE FOR THE MX-30?

The 2022 MX-30 will start at $33,470 without including destination and handling, taxes, title, or additional fees.

WHEN DOES THE MX-30 GO ON SALE?

The Mazda MX-30 went on sale at California dealerships in October 2021.

WHAT IS THE BATTERY SIZE OF THE MX-30?

The MX-30 was designed to be green and fun to drive. The 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery allows for a lower environmental impact.

CAN THE MAZDA MX-30 BE CHARGED IN THE RAIN?

Yes, there is no risk of electric shock when charging in the rain. The MX-30 charging port is designed to allow for small amounts of water or dust to get in the port when charging the car. There is also a cover and seal that is designed to keep the charging port clean and dry.

Note: it is not recommended to charge the high voltage battery outside if there is heavy rain, strong winds, and/or lightning and you should avoid touching the charge port or charge cable with wet hands.

WHAT TYPE OF CHARGING PORT DOES THE MX-30 HAVE?

The MX-30 is configured for the international standard Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, which is compatible with all public (excluding Tesla) and in-house charging stations.

WHY DOES THE MX-30 HAVE A 50 KW CHARGING PORT WHEN 150 KW IS AVAILABLE ON OTHER ELECTRIC VEHICLES?

A 50 kW charging port is the appropriate rate to charge the 35.5 kWh battery in the MX-30.

WHAT WILL BE THE IMPACT ON THE RANGE OF THE MX-30 AS THE BATTERY AGES?

Mazda is confident in the battery’s performance. For added peace of mind, the battery will include an eight-year, or 100,000-mile warranty, should there be any issues.

WHAT IS THE MAZDA MX-30 ELITE ACCESS LOANER PROGRAM?

While Mazda believes the range of the MX-30 will satisfy most customers’ daily needs, they recognize that there may be some instances where the mileage capacity could be restrictive. To accommodate those needs, the MX-30 Elite Access Loaner Program was created to give MX-30 owners access to other vehicles in the Mazda family, based on dealer participation (Capistrano Mazda is a participating dealer), availability, and having a reservation in advance, for up to 10 days per year for the first three years of ownership.

WHY DOES THE MX-30 HAVE FREESTYLE DOORS?

The design of the MX-30 is focused on openness. The freestyle doors help achieve this intent while providing easier entry and exit from both front and rear seats, as well as simpler loading and unloading of cargo.

Opening the front door reveals a latch to easily access the rear doors and allow entry to the back seats. The front seats can be conveniently adjusted by front occupants with the traditional seat controls or new power controls on the back of the driver’s seat for rear occupants sitting behind the driver.

ARE THE MX-30 FREESTYLE DOORS SAFE?

The doors feature hot-stamped vertical reinforcements, reinforcement of the front and rear hinges as well as side sills, resulting in body strength and energy-absorbing efficiency on par with cars that have center pillars.

IS THE MX-30 FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE OR ALL-WHEEL DRIVE?

The MX-30 will launch in the US with front-wheel drive. Future model specs will be shared when available.

WHAT TRIMS AND PACKAGES WILL THE MX-30 COME IN?

The MX-30 will be available in two models. It will be offered as standard as Mazda MX-30 EV or equipped with the Premium Plus package, which includes more features and options.

WHAT COMES IN THE PREMIUM PLUS PACKAGE ON THE MX-30?

The following items are included in the MX-30 Premium Package:

WHAT MODEL YEAR IS THE MX-30?

HOW BIG IS THE MX-30?

The MX-30 is similar in size to the Mazda CX-30.

EPA passenger volume front/rear in cubic feet: 51.6 front, 38.2 rear

EPA cargo volume in cubic feet: 21.04

WHAT IS THE TOP SPEED OF THE MX-30?

The top speed of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 is 87 mph.

WHAT IS THE HORSEPOWER OF THE MX-30?

The MX-30 electric motor will provide an output of 107 kW (143 horsepower).

WHAT IS THE TORQUE OF THE MX-30?

The MX-30 electric motor will provide a maximum torque of 200 lb-ft at 3,243 rpm.

WHAT DOES “MX” STAND FOR IN MX-30?

Mazda wants to communicate the new era this electric vehicle brings to the brand while using an established Mazda nomenclature that our customers are familiar with. “MX” currently exists with the “MX-5 Miata” however, in Mazda’s history, “MX” has also been used in concept cars which are meant to propose new values and focus on the future – both characteristics seen in the MX-30. The “30” shares a connection with the “CX-30” that has a similar size.

IS THERE A CAMERA ON THE MX-30 INFOTAINMENT DISPLAY?

The circle on the infotainment display is the new Driver Monitor* feature that provides a visual and audible alert to suggest taking a break when the driver monitoring camera, located in the Mazda Connect infotainment display housing, recognizes changes on the driver’s face that could suggest sleepiness or fatigue while driving.

*Included in Premium Package.

WHY DOES THE MX-30 SEEM TO HAVE AN ENGINE SOUND?

Even though electric vehicles produce no engine sound, Mazda’s e-Skyactiv provides audible feedback to the driver that enables them to subconsciously recognize the torque status of the power unit and thus control vehicle speed with greater precision.

ARE ANY OF THE MATERIALS IN THE MX-30 SUSTAINABLE?

Mazda wanted to use materials that show even greater respect for environmental conservation while balancing sustainability with the natural appeal and craftsmanship of the materials.

The cork accents in the center console and door grips are one of the most sustainable materials available. The seats feature leatherette and fabric that uses 20% recycled threads. The door trims also use recycled PET bottles.

WHY IS THE MX-30 ONLY AVAILABLE IN CALIFORNIA? CAN I PURCHASE AN MX-30 IF I DO NOT LIVE IN CALIFORNIA?

Mazda has strategically decided to roll out its first electric vehicle in California before expanding to other states in 2022.

If you live outside of California, you can still purchase the MX-30, but warranty service and other services/rebates may be limited. Mazda dealerships outside of California will only be able to handle typical maintenance (such as tire rotations, brakes, washer fluid, etc.). Electric vehicle system repairs would require the vehicle to be serviced in California. It is recommended to service MX-30 by a trained CA Mazda dealership.

DOES THE MX-30QUALIFY FOR THE $7,500 FEDERAL TAX CREDIT?

Several electric vehicles qualify for the up to $7,500 federal tax credit incentive, and the Mazda MX-30 is one of them. The amount of tax credit is based on the battery size of the electric vehicle, so the MX-30 qualifies for the entire $7,500 available. Up to $7,500 means that if you owe $7,500 or more at the end of the year, you will receive the full value of the credit. If you only owe $5,000, then you would receive that amount in credit. You cannot carry over the unused portion to the following tax year.

WHAT IS THE CALIFORNIA CLEAN AIR REBATE?

California offers an additional incentive to purchase electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles known as the California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP). The Mazda MX-30 is eligible for a $2,000 rebate through the CVRP. Eligible California residents can apply for this rebate through a simple process after purchasing or leasing an MX-30 as long as the customer qualifies and funds are available.

WHAT IS THE CALIFORNIA CLEAN FUEL REBATE?

California also offers the California Clean Fuel Reward, which is available to anyone who purchases or leases an eligible electric vehicle with a battery capacity of more than 5 kWh from a participating retailer. The Mazda MX-30 is eligible for $750, thanks to its 35.5-kWh battery.

WHAT IS THE ZERO TO 60 MPH FOR THE MX-30?

The Mazda MX-30 goes from zero to 60 in approximately 8.7 seconds.

CAN I GET A CARPOOL (HOV) STICKER FOR THE MX-30?

Yes! The Mazda MX-30 is eligible for California’s Highway-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) decal, which allows you access into the Carpool lane even when driving solo.

WHAT IS THE BATTERY WARRANTY?

The Mazda MX-30 high-voltage battery has a warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

ARE THERE ANY INCENTIVES ON THE MX-30?

Yes, there are incentives on the Mazda MX-30 in the form of rebates, including the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit, the $750 California Clean Fuel Rebate as well as $2,000 California Clean Air Rebate (if eligible). Customer incentives and rebates change frequently, so be sure to contact Capistrano Mazda to confirm any available incentives.
