The 2024 Mazda CX-90: Frequently Asked Questions

Mazda is taking a giant leap with its third-row SUV offerings this year by introducing a brand-new model to its lineup — the CX-90. The CX-90 replaces Mazda's previous third-row SUV offering, the CX-9, and is making its debut with the 2024 model. The CX-90 aims to elevate the SUV to a more sophisticated status and comes with luxurious details and impressive power under the hood. As a driver in Orange County, California, you'll likely be pleased with Mazda's new offering, as it successfully blends class and performance.

At Capistrano Mazda, we know that you might have some questions about the all-new CX-90. We're here to help and are ready to answer all your queries. We've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions surrounding the CX-90 in hopes that you can find all of your answers in one place. Keep reading to learn a little bit more about this new player in Mazda's SUV game.

How Does the CX-90 Differ From the CX-9?

Mazda really pulled out all the stops when it came to envisioning the CX-9. The differences between the CX-9 and the CX-90 are so monumental that Mazda had to create a completely new model rather than simply upgrading the current one.

Let's start by talking about size. The CX-90 is bigger than the CX-9 in just about every direction. The overall length of the CX-90 extends by about 2 inches, the wheelbase is 7 inches longer, and the height is almost an inch taller. This means that you and your passengers will benefit from increased passenger and cargo volume compared to the CX-9. While the CX-9 was designed to hold either six or seven passengers depending on the seat configuration, the CX-90 can seat either seven or eight.

The next area where we really see a huge difference between the two models is their powertrain. The CX-90 includes three brand-new powertrains, all of which are hybrids. Two of them utilize what is known as a mild-hybrid system, while the third is Mazda's first-ever American plug-in hybrid.

The mild-hybrid system helps to boost acceleration and improve fuel efficiency, and the plug-in hybrid boasts a 7.8 kWh battery pack that will provide you with approximately 26 miles of all-electric driving range. This is a stark contrast to the CX-9, which offers two options, neither of which is a hybrid.

Is the CX-9 Discontinued?

The CX-9 is being discontinued following its 2023 model to make way for the all-new CX-90. Introduced in 2007, the CX-9 continues to rank high in terms of performance, safety, quality, and reliability. However, Mazda has decided to focus on creating all-new SUVs for its lineup, building on the success of the CX-9 and enhancing its performance and styling to elevate its lineup to a more luxurious status.

In addition to the CX-90, Mazda introduced the CX-50 in 2022 and plans on introducing the CX-70 soon. The addition of these SUVs to Mazda's lineup should round out the group nicely, offering something for everyone.

How Many Seats Are in the CX-90?

The CX-90 has the ever-popular third-row seating arrangement that makes this SUV a versatile family car. The second row can either be a bench seat or captain's chair, and the third-row seats provide seating for either two or three people, meaning the passenger capacity ranges from six to eight passengers based on the seating configuration. The top three trim levels have lower seating capacities, while the lower five trim levels give you the option to carry more passengers. The option to seat eight passengers makes the CX-90 Mazda's highest-passenger SUV.

What Are the Dimensions of the CX-90?

The CX-90 is still classified as a midsize SUV, but it's slightly larger than its predecessor, the CX-9. The length comes in at 200.8 inches, the wheelbase is 122.8 inches, and the height of the CX-90 is 68.2 inches. These dimensions combine to create a total interior volume of 156.5 cubic feet and a maximum of 74.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

What Are the Trim Levels of the CX-90?

Mazda wants to make sure that the CX-90 offers a trim level to suit every driver's needs, so in total, there are 11 trim offerings. For starters, you can choose from the 3.3 Turbo Select, 3.3 Turbo Preferred, 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus, 3.3 Turbo Premium, 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus, 3.3 Turbo S, 3.3 Turbo S Premium, and 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus trims. In addition to these, Mazda adds three trim levels that include the plug-in hybrid engine: PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium, and PHEV Premium Plus.

All trim levels feature Mazda's distinct athletic design, roof rails, rear privacy glass, and an AWD badge to show that they are all-wheel drive.

How Much Does the CX-90 Cost?

With all of the luxurious upgrades to the CX-90, you might expect it to come with a hefty price tag. However, pricing for the various trim levels is surprisingly affordable. While the CX-9 lacked many of the advanced features of the new CX-90, most notably a hybrid engine, pricing for the CX-90 is remarkably similar to its forerunner. The starting MSRP for each trim level is as follows:

  • 3.3 Turbo Select:  $39,595.
  • 3.3 Turbo Preferred:  $43,445.
  • 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus:  $45,900.
  • PHEV Preferred:  $47,445.
  • 3.3 Turbo Premium:  48,900.
  • 3.3 Turbo S:  $51,750.
  • 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus:  $52,950.
  • PHEV Premium:  $52,900.
  • 3.3 Turbo S Premium:  $56,450.
  • PHEV Premium Plus:  $56,950.
  • 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus:  $59,950.
