Competition in the crossover SUV segment is fierce. With many companies producing multiple offerings, sometimes upwards of four or five, an automaker really has to give the potential customer a reason to consider buying their product.
Today, we’ll be comparing 2020 Mazda CX-30 and the 2020 Honda HR-V to see which compact crossover is worth your time and money.

Mazda is known for its exceptionally well-handling vehicles. The 2020 CX-30 effortlessly lives up to that reputation. Its handling is responsive and pleasantly weighty. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is near-perfect in CX-30, giving the compact crossover great acceleration and power. But a good engine is no match for a bad transmission, so we’re happy to say that the six-speed automatic in the CX-30 is silky smooth. The 2020 HR-V doesn’t quite meet the standards the CX-30 sets. We’ll give credit where it’s due: the HR-V handles well. It’s responsive and precise. However, the subpar engine and CVT don’t deliver power to road very well. The HR-V feels little too sluggish around town and too unresponsive on the highway. Not to mention that the smaller engine doesn’t even give the HR-V better gas mileage than the CX-30.
Despite being top-of-the-line trim, the 2020 HR-V Touring still feels a like a budget vehicle on the inside. The interior doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy, and is generally comfortable, but it doesn’t have that sense of refinement you’d expect from a near $30,000 vehicle. The Mazda CX-30 Premium is a night-and-day difference. With features like premium leather seats, a heads-up display, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and many more, the CX-30 feels more like a European luxury car than a typical Japanese import.
